How to pass A/L Biology in Sri Lanka

Written by Idasara Academy (drafted by AI agents from the cited sources).

To pass G.C.E. A/L Biology in Sri Lanka, work through the National Institute of Education (NIE) syllabus unit by unit: 10 units across Grades 12 and 13. Practise each unit's questions as soon as you finish it, check what you got wrong, and fix it before you move on. Give Unit 5, Animal form and function, the most time: the NIE gives it more teaching time than any other unit, and it runs from the end of Grade 12 into Grade 13 (NIE syllabus, pp. vi–vii). Do the practical work with the theory, as the syllabus expects (NIE syllabus, p. 72). This is the Sri Lankan G.C.E. (A/L), not Cambridge or Edexcel A-Level Biology.

"Practise, check, fix" is Idasara's method, not an NIE statement. Every fact on this page names the page of the NIE A/L Biology syllabus it comes from.

How do I pass A/L Biology, step by step?

1. What do I actually have to learn for A/L Biology?

The NIE syllabus: 10 units, implemented from 2017, taught over Grades 12 and 13 (NIE syllabus, title page and p. vi). Learn the unit list before anything else, so you always know which unit a lesson or a question belongs to.

→ Free: the A/L Biology hub: every unit and its teaching time

2. Where do I start in Grade 12?

With Units 1 and 2 (Introduction to Biology; Chemical and cellular basis of life) and the first part of Unit 3. The NIE's first term of Grade 12 runs from competency level 1.1.1 to 3.2.3 (NIE syllabus, pp. vi–vii).

→ Free: Unit 2 notes: Chemical and Physical Basis of Life

3. Why does my school's term not line up with a whole unit?

Because the NIE divides the terms by competency level, not by whole unit. Units 3 and 5 each run across two terms, and Unit 5 crosses from Grade 12 into Grade 13 (NIE syllabus, p. vii). Find the unit your class is on in the table below and work from there.

4. Which unit should get the most time?

Unit 5, Animal form and function. It has more teaching periods than any other unit (NIE syllabus, p. vi), and the NIE splits it: up to 5.5.3 in the third term of Grade 12, from 5.6.1 in the first term of Grade 13 (NIE syllabus, p. vii). Idasara's suggestion: finish and practise the Grade 12 part before the year ends, so Grade 13 does not start with a backlog.

5. Are the practicals part of what I have to learn?

Yes. The NIE expects the theory of each unit to be dealt with together with its practical components, which the syllabus prints in italics (NIE syllabus, p. 72). Idasara's suggestion: when you study a unit, note its practical work as you go rather than leaving the practicals for the end.

→ Free: A/L Biology learning resources, by lesson

6. How do I know my answers would earn the marks?

Attempt a question before you read the solution, then compare your working line by line. Idasara's suggestion: keep a list of the points you missed and re-try those questions a week later.

→ Free: A/L Biology model questions, by lesson

→ Get your own answers marked

7. How do I revise when I am sitting the examination again?

Unit by unit, starting with the units you lost marks on. Read the unit's revision notes, then do that unit's practice questions before you move to the next one (Idasara's suggestion).

→ Free: A/L Biology revision notes

How the exam works

G.C.E. A/L Biology is set by the Department of Examinations in two papers (the structure for the examination from 2019 onwards). Paper I takes 2 hours: 50 multiple-choice questions with 5 options, all to be answered, at 1 mark each — 50 marks. Paper II takes 3 hours, plus 10 minutes' reading time: Part A, 4 compulsory structured essay questions at 100 marks each (400); Part B, answer 4 of 6 essay questions at 150 marks each (600) — 1,000 marks. The final mark is Paper I (50) plus Paper II divided by 20 (50), out of 100. (Department of Examinations structure booklet, p. 96.)

Where is my unit?

Your school's term may cut a unit in a different place (step 3). Teaching time per unit is on the A/L Biology hub, not repeated here.

Unit names from the NIE syllabus, p. vi; terms from the competency-level ranges on p. vii (a unit sits in every term whose range touches it). The site's page for Unit 2 is titled "Chemical and Physical Basis of Life". Each link opens the first free lesson of that unit; most units have several lessons, so a link does not mean the whole unit is covered.
