Kavi's crossroads: what comes after the O/Ls?
Consider Kavi, a typical Sri Lankan student. Kavi works desperately hard for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination, sat around age sixteen. And the moment it ends, Kavi's parents fall into deep anxiety: "So what comes next? A/L Science? Commerce? Or Arts?"
Traditionally our society recognised one road: you must do A/Ls and enter university, or your life is over.
That belief was never quite true, and in 2026 it is straightforwardly false. Three pathways now open in front of Kavi, and a parent's job at this crossroads is to see all three clearly rather than to assume the first one.

Path 1: A/Ls and university
Who it suits: children with a genuine love of theoretical learning, and a professional dream — doctor, engineer, lawyer — that lives inside the child, not only inside the parents. That parenthesis is the whole test, and it is worth being honest with yourself about it.
What a parent must know: of the students who pass the A/Ls, only a small fraction win a university place. The Z-Score cutoff ranks students across the island for a fixed number of state seats, and thousands compete for the same few chairs. The arithmetic is not a reflection on any child's ability.
Which leads to a practical conclusion rather than a discouraging one: even on this path, building AI literacy and English in parallel is essential insurance. A child who does both arrives at the results either with a university place or with employable skills — instead of with nothing but a disappointment.
Path 2: vocational and technical training
Who it suits: children gifted with their hands — drawn to making things, to technical equipment, to practical work.
What a parent must know: the era of treating "we sent him to the technical college" as an admission of failure is over, and the reason is economic rather than sentimental. In the AI age a modern, technology-equipped tradesperson — an electrician, an AC technician, a CNC operator — often out-earns office workers, and those jobs are among the hardest to automate. No machine is climbing onto the roof of a Sri Lankan house to fix the wiring.
There is a genuine irony here that every parent should sit with. The white-collar office work long treated as the safe, respectable destination is precisely the category most exposed to AI, while the practical trades treated as second-best are among the most protected.
Path 3: direct employability and digital creation
Who it suits: children with a natural pull toward self-learning, computers and creative work.
What a parent must know: for a young person with English, AI tools and one concrete digital skill — design, content, data, marketing — an era has arrived in which they can work for a company anywhere in the world from their own village, not from Colombo, and be paid in dollars.
On this path the certificate is not a piece of paper. It is the portfolio of work the child has actually built and shipped — which is a standard that can be started at sixteen and cannot be bought.

Note that all three paths reward the same underlying capacity, which is why choosing between them is less consequential than it feels on results day.
The world of work beyond 2030
Most parents carry one fear: will AI leave my child without a job?
The honest answer is that jobs will change rather than disappear. The machine takes tasks, not posts — but a person who uses AI will overtake a person who does not, which is where a parent's attention belongs.

Seeing to the root of problems. Facing a difficulty without fear, analysing its true cause, and inventing a solution. This is what the Socratic questioning in Chapter 03 builds, one why at a time.
