How do you protect a child's data?

For a teacher using AI, the first ethical duty is protecting children's privacy and data — and it is a duty that arrives before any question of teaching method, because the consequences of getting it wrong fall on someone who cannot consent.

As Core Module 06 established, data entered into public cloud AI systems may be retained on those companies' servers and used to train future models. A child's name in a prompt has, in the general case, left your school.

Never give a child's identity to a public AI. No full name, school, address, photograph or ID number in a public tool such as ChatGPT. If you want an essay analysed, strip the name and write only "an essay by a Grade 10 student." Anonymisation costs you nothing and it is the single most effective safeguard available.

Never feed mark sheets or progress data into public tools. If you need class marks analysed, replace names with codes — S01, S02 and so on. The analysis is identical; the exposure is not.

Use only a sanctioned platform. Student data belongs on an education platform built for the purpose and accountable for it — not in whatever free app happens to be convenient. Convenience is exactly how this rule gets broken.

Keep parents informed. When you introduce a digital method to your class, explain openly to parents how their child's data is used. Transparency is not a formality here; it is what makes the trust survive the first time a parent hears something worrying about AI in the news.

Never publicise a child's failure. The red row on the Heat-Map is the teacher's operational data. It is not a shame list to be shown to the class, and treating it as one destroys the very thing the data was collected to improve.

What does a product-engineer teacher do differently?

The School Students track tells the student: do not be a mere coder, become a product engineer. The same architectural mindset applies to the person at the front of the room.

The routine teacher works from fifteen years of the same notes, the same questions and the same pace. When the examination ends, they read the results and conclude "this class is weak." The process itself is never examined, which means fifteen years of experience have produced fifteen repetitions of year one.

The product-engineer teacher treats the term's teaching plan as a product and runs the engineering cycle on it. Design: what learning experience fits these children, in this class, this term? The engineer-teacher begins at why — why do these children need this concept, and why is it eluding them?
