About A/L Chemistry: A/L Chemistry covers physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry across two years.

A. Thermodynamic Systems and Boundaries Definition: A thermodynamic system is a specific portion of the universe selected for study, separated from its surroundings by a boundary. Explanation: In thermodynamics, we focus on a particular part of the universe called the system. Everything outside this system is called the surroundings. The imaginary or real surface that separates the system from the surroundings is called the boundary. This classification helps us analyze energy and matter exchanges. Systems can be open (exchange both matter and energy), closed (exchange only energy, not matter), or isolated (exchange neither matter nor energy). Understanding these classifications is fundamental to analyzing thermodynamic processes. Think of it as: Think of a thermos flask as an isolated system - it doesn't exchange heat or matter with the outside. A cup of hot coffee with a lid is a closed system (heat escapes but coffee doesn't). An open cup of coffee is an open system (both heat and water vapor can escape).
