My subject's textbook has very few figures — history, literature, languages. Can I still walk it? Walk what exists (maps, timelines, source boxes), then build the missing skeleton yourself: the pictures chapter showed you how — one hand-drawn timeline or flowchart per chapter. Your own figures walk even better than the book's, because you built them from memory once already.
