How Mind Maps Make Your Short Notes Better

A mind map is a short note drawn as a picture: the topic at the centre, branches for the main ideas, and connections your brain can see at a glance. You write it as a list — and the connections, the very thing the exam will ask about, fall between the lines.

How do you draw a mind map that teaches you?

A good study map takes ten minutes and one rule you already know from this book's chapter on short notes.

  1. Centre: write the topic in the middle of a blank page — landscape works better.
  2. Branches: draw a thick branch for each main idea of the chapter — aim for four to seven. Fewer means you haven't separated the ideas; many more means you haven't grouped them.
  3. Twigs: off each branch, add the details that belong to it — the formula, the example, the exception. Keep every entry to a word or two; a map that turns into sentences is a list in disguise.
  4.   • Web-shaped material (systems, causes and effects, comparisons, anything "discuss the relationship") → map first, then a few lines of notes for the details that need sentences.

Many strong students settle into a rhythm: map on the left page for the wiring, dense bullets on the right page for the precision — definitions with exact syllabus wording, formulas with units. The map answers how it fits together; the bullets answer what exactly to write for full marks. Revision then starts at the map — thirty seconds re-draws the whole chapter's shape in your head — and drops into the bullets only where the map felt shaky.

  2. Read the relevant section once more, then close the book.

FAQ

Aren't mind maps just for "creative" students? No — the map's power is structural, not artistic. Colours and drawings are optional decoration; the learning lives in the branching and the labelled connections, which any hand can draw with one pen.
