About A/L Chemistry: A/L Chemistry covers physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry across two years.
A. Primary Chemical Bonds
Definition: Primary chemical bonds are strong forces of attraction that hold atoms together in molecules or compounds, formed by the sharing or transfer of valence electrons between atoms. Explanation: Primary bonds are the fundamental forces that create chemical compounds. They involve valence electrons - the outermost electrons of atoms. There are three main types: covalent bonds (sharing electrons between atoms), ionic bonds (complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another), and metallic bonds (delocalized electrons shared among many metal atoms). These bonds are much stronger than secondary interactions and determine the basic structure and many properties of substances. The type of bond formed depends on the electronegativity difference between the atoms involved.
