A. Asexual Reproduction Definition: A type of reproduction that involves a single parent and produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent, without the fusion of gametes. Explanation: Asexual reproduction is a process where offspring arise from a single organism and inherit the genes of that parent only. It does not involve the fusion of gametes (sex cells), so the offspring are clones of the parent. This type of reproduction is common in many simple organisms and some animals, allowing for rapid population growth under favorable conditions. The main advantage is that it requires less energy and time compared to sexual reproduction, but the disadvantage is lack of genetic variation. Think of it as: Like making photocopies of a document - each copy is identical to the original, with no new combinations or variations. Real-world application: Many invertebrates like hydra reproduce asexually through budding, allowing them to quickly colonize new areas.
