Overuse of Past Perfect
Do not use Past Perfect for single isolated past actions; write 'King Parakramabahu built the Sea of Parakrama', NOT 'had built' unless contrasting with another past event.
-
'By the time' clause rule
The clause after 'by the time' takes Simple Past, while the main clause takes Past Perfect ('By the time the sun set, the masons had finished the wall').
