What is The nature of statistics?

Statistics is the mathematical discipline concerned with collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting numerical data to draw valid conclusions. Data is classified fundamentally as: (1) Qualitative (categorical attributes, e.g., blood group, grade) versus Quantitative (numerical measurements); (2) Quantitative data is subdivided into Discrete (values obtained by counting, taking isolated integer values) and Continuous (values obtained by measurement on a continuous scale). Data presentation methods include grouped frequency distribution tables, bar charts, pie charts, histograms (where class frequencies are proportional to rectangle areas), and cumulative frequency ogives.

  1. Class Boundary Conversion: Converting discrete class limits (e.g., 10-19, 20-29) into continuous class boundaries (9.5-19.5, 19.5-29.5) before plotting histograms.
  2. Unequal Class Width Adjustment: Calculating frequency density (Frequency / Class Width) as the vertical height when drawing histograms with unequal intervals.
  3. Cumulative Frequency Ogive Construction: Plotting cumulative frequencies strictly against the upper class boundaries.
