What must I remember about Logarithms I?
- Logarithm definition: The logarithm of a positive number y to a positive base a (a ≠ 1) is the exponent x to which a must be raised to equal y: ax = y ⟺ loga y = x.
- Product law of logarithms: loga (xy) = loga x + loga y.
- Quotient law of logarithms: loga (x / y) = loga x - loga y.
- Power law of logarithms: loga (xk) = k loga x.
- Base identities: loga a = 1; loga 1 = 0; aloga x = x.

-
The pseudo-distributive logarithm error
log(x + y) NEVER equals log x + log y; similarly log(x - y) NEVER equals log x - log y.
-
Quotient law vs fraction of logs
log(x / y) = log x - log y, which is completely different from (log x) / (log y).
-
Converting between forms
Master switching rapidly between index form (2⁵ = 32) and log form (log₂ 32 = 5) for Paper 1 Part A questions.
