Graphs — O/L Mathematics
Aligned with the NIE syllabus
What must I remember about Graphs?
- Quadratic graph standard form: y = ax² + bx + c (parabolic curve).
- Shape of parabola: If a > 0, the curve is concave upwards (U-shaped) possessing a Minimum turning point; if a < 0, concave downwards (inverted U) possessing a Maximum turning point.
- Axis of symmetry: The vertical line passing through the vertex, given by x = -b / (2a).
- Roots of the equation: The x-coordinates of the points where the graph intersects the x-axis (where y = 0).
- Sign of quadratic function: Values of x for which the graph lies above the x-axis represent y > 0; values where it lies below represent y < 0.

-
Coordinates of turning point
Always write the turning point as an ordered pair (x, y) with both coordinates clearly stated.
-
Smooth parabolic curve
Plot points accurately and connect with a continuous smooth curve; NEVER join plotted points with straight ruler lines.
-
Interval of increase/decrease
State intervals with correct inequality signs (e.g., 'function increases for x > 1').
