What is Areas of Plane Figures between Parallel Lines?
This lesson focuses on finding the area of plane figures that lie between two parallel lines. The fundamental idea is that when a figure is bounded by two parallel lines, its area can be determined by the product of the distance between the parallel lines and the length of the mid-segment (or the average length of the two parallel sides, if the figure is a trapezium). The key is to understand how to decompose or transform such figures into simpler shapes whose areas we can calculate.
The most important concept is the area of a trapezium. A trapezium is a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides. These parallel sides are called the bases (usually denoted as a and b). The distance between these two parallel sides is called the height (h). The area of a trapezium is given by:
Area = (1/2) * (sum of the lengths of the parallel sides) * (distance between them) = (1/2) * (a + b) * h.
